Honesty the Best Policy?

I just read this article about a homeless man who found $21,000 worth of savings bonds in a trash can, and returned the bonds to their rightful owners. He was recognized by many for his honesty and ended up racking in $4,000 worth of goods and money.

Yes, the story is warm and fuzzy, but am I the only one thinking... dude, you could have had $21K instead of $4K if you just kept the bonds! Anyways, does someone who throws $21K in the garbage really deserve to get the money back? Not to mention, the owner is not only careless, but cheap too. In their appreciation they "rewarded" the homeless man $100 for his kindness. You tip a waitress at a restaurant 15% at least, but you won't tip a guy even 1% for giving you $21K out of nowhere!?! Come on.

In this case I'm just torn between the two childhood sayings "Honesty is the Best Policy" and "Finders keepers losers weepers"... But in the end, it's cool to see someone you'd expect to pick the 2nd pick the 1st!

Switching to Ubuntu

I made up my mind a week ago to switch to Ubuntu Linux (away from Windows XP). This is mostly because I'm almost sure my WinXP is infested with all sorts of spyware, viruses, etc. Plus, I wanted a good setup to do development, and Linux can't be beat for that.

Also Ubuntu, in my mind, is the first Linux-based OS to give Microsoft a run for its money. It's simple to use (maybe even more so than XP?) and fully featured. And, of course, FREE. So far after a few days of use, I'm extremely happy with it. I think I'd even recommend it for my mom (and my grandma, if she used a computer in the first place). :) Here's a screen shot of my desktop:

Best Coffee Shops in Seattle

I saw this commercial lately where these 40ish year old women are travelling the world together looking for the best cup of coffee. I forget what the commercial was for, maybe a credit card or something? Anyways, I do remember that the women visited at least 3 cities, and one of them was Seattle.

So, since I'm living in one of the well-known coffee capitals of the world, and I know at least a bit about the coffee "scene" here, I thought I'd throw together a list of my current top favourite coffee shops in Seattle. The top 5 contenders:

1. Macrina (Belltown) - The lattes are like crack, seriously, 'nuff said
2. Cherry Street (Belltown) - Seats are super uncomfortable, but the coffee makes up for it
3. Vivace (Capitol Hill) - What can I say, I make the trip to the Hill just to drink coffee there!
4. Top Pot (Belltown) - Always good coffee, and location is convenient
5. Cafe Vita (Capitol Hill) - Pretty good coffee, super artsy crowd :)

Now go get some caffeine!

Thievery Corporation Rocked!

Last night I saw Thievery Corporation at the Moore Theatre. Amazing show!

As always with live electronic music though, you always wonder what those guys are doing on the turntables and knobs. I mean, this music wasn't produced live in the first place, so at most they might be mixing in some extra samples or just adjusting levels. My guess is they're just twidding knobs that aren't actually connected to anything, and it's all for show. Either way, none of that detracted from the performance. The sound was great, the music was high-energy, and the crowd was loving it!

Would have been nice to see these guys in an actual club rather than sitting in a reserved seat. The music just asks you to stand up and move, but after doing so the event staff would just ask you to sit down and chill out.

Loved .38 .45 especially- and putting a face/picture to the rasta voices I know and love!
